The Sport of Pickleball: A Fun and Easy Game for All Ages

Discover the Excitement of Pickleball

If you’re looking for a new sport to try, look no further than pickleball. Often described as a blend of tennis, ping pong, and badminton, pickleball is gaining popularity among people of all ages and fitness levels. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned player, pickleball offers a fun and enjoyable experience that is easy to learn and difficult to master.

The Basics of Pickleball

Pickleball is played on a 44 by 20-foot court, divided by a net that stands 34 inches high at the center and 36 inches at the posts. Each side of the court has a left and right service area, as well as a 7-foot “no volley zone,” commonly known as “the kitchen.” Players use short paddles and a wiffle-type ball to volley and score points.

Simple Rules, Endless Fun

The rules of pickleball are straightforward, making it accessible for players of all skill levels. The serve must be made underhand and diagonally crosscourt, with the contact below the server’s waist. Unlike tennis, only one serve attempt is allowed, except in the case of a “let” where the ball touches the net but still lands in bounds.

After the serve, the ball must bounce before being returned, and then the serving team must let it bounce before hitting it back. This is known as the “two bounce rule.” Players can either volley the ball or play it off a bounce, but they cannot volley in the kitchen. Additionally, players must not let their momentum carry them forward into the kitchen while volleying a ball.

A Side-Out Scoring Method

Pickleball follows a “side-out” scoring method, which may seem confusing at first but becomes simple with practice. The first serve of a game is made from the right side of the court, and if a point is scored, the server switches to the left side. This rotation continues until a fault occurs, and then the serve passes to the opposing team.

In singles play, “side-outs” happen at each fault, and the server alternates between the right and left sides based on their score. This scoring system keeps the game balanced and ensures both teams have equal opportunities to score points.
