The Rise of Pickleball: A Sport for All Ages

A New Indoor Pickleball Center Offers a Unique Experience for Enthusiasts

For Sam Brown, retirement didn’t mean sitting back and taking it easy. Instead, it marked the beginning of a new chapter in his lifeā€”one that would see him become a leading figure in the world of pickleball. Pickleball, a game similar to tennis but played on smaller courts with paddles and a perforated plastic ball, captured Brown’s attention and quickly became his passion. Now, he is preparing to open the first dedicated indoor pickleball facility in the Denver area, complete with a bar and event space.

Brown’s journey began a decade ago when he moved to Broomfield with dreams of spending his days on the tennis court. However, a series of surgeries made it difficult for him to continue playing tennis. One day, while walking past some courts, he discovered pickleball and was immediately drawn to the game. Since then, he has become an advanced player, competing in leagues and tournaments across the country. In 2018, he even launched the American Pickleball Association to raise awareness about the sport and promote its growth.

The new indoor pickleball center, known as Pickleball Food Pub, will occupy a 25,500-square-foot space in Westminster’s Mission Commons shopping center. The facility will feature eight indoor pickleball courts, a bar serving pickle juice shots and craft beer from a nearby brewery, and indoor and outdoor dining areas. While food won’t be directly available at the pub, guests will be able to order from nearby restaurants for delivery.

The decision to open an indoor facility came as a response to the limited options for year-round play in the Denver area. Currently, players can only enjoy indoor pickleball at rec centers, where the courts are often shared with other sports and the playing conditions are less than ideal. Brown wanted to create a space dedicated solely to pickleball, providing players with a better experience.

The opening of Pickleball Food Pub is not just a significant event for the local pickleball community; it is also a milestone for the American Pickleball Association. This will be the association’s first corporate facility, with plans to open franchises in 37 states. Brown, who is already looking into a second location in Aurora, hopes that this expansion will help fuel the growing popularity of pickleball among people of all ages.

While pickleball is often associated with older adults, Brown believes that the sport is evolving and attracting a wider demographic. Leagues will be available for all skill levels, and the facility will offer court rentals and clinics. Moreover, pickleball has the potential to bring together multiple generations on the court, as Brown experienced when a friend and his family joined him for a game. This inclusivity and the sport’s adaptability make it truly special.

Pickleball Food Pub is set to open its doors in January, providing a new haven for pickleball enthusiasts in the Denver area. With its unique combination of sports, entertainment, and socializing, this facility is sure to become a gathering place for all those passionate about pickleball. So whether you’re a seasoned player or curious about trying out the game, Pickleball Food Pub offers an exciting opportunity to join the growing pickleball community.
